John Waters: Reckless Eyeballs

when: Now through Sat 8.18 (Tue-Fri: 10:30am-5:30pm / Sat: 11am-5pm)
where: Rena Bransten Gallery (77 Geary St, 415.982.3292)
price: FREE

Executed with bonhomie but also deviant panache, John Waters presents his third solo exhibition with Rena Bransten Gallery. Fans familiar with the cult-auteur's films but less so with his art shouldn't be surprised to find a six-foot rubber snake (Waters' "reincarnation") or 20 photographic stills gleaned from films deemed "unwatchable" by critics. The stills, laid out side-by-side, isolate the same satisfyingly humorous and satirical juxtapositions that make watching cult films enjoyable in the first place. While the show might have just as easily been titled Reckless Filmmakers, the artist's trademark focus on culture's castaways and misfits shines through.

Divine memories

Divine memories
A newbie reporter meets a famous old queen
http://www.fabmagazine.com/features/322/divine.html

In his new book The View from Here: Conversations with Gay and Lesbian Filmmakers (Arsenal Pulp Press,$26.95), Montreal writer Matthew Hays grills Pedro Almodóvar, Gregg Araki, John Greyson, Bruce LaBruce, Patricia Rozema, Gus Van Sant and John Waters. But he saves his most tantalizing subject for last, devoting the postscript to his 1986 interview with the late Divine, star of Waters’ movies Female Trouble (1974), Polyester (1981), Hairspray (1988) and Pink Flamingos (1972) where he infamously ate dog shit for the camera.

In this excerpt from the book, Hays celebrates Divine like only an enthralled queer fan could. The actor/singer/drag artist/troublemaker died two years after they spoke.

In 1986, at the age of 21, I managed to land an interview with Divine, John Waters’ leading lady in a number of his nowlegendary films, for The Gateway, the student paper at the University of Alberta in my hometown of Edmonton. What follows is the first interview I ever conducted. Divine was in town for two nights, playing at a club called Goose Loonies. (No, I’m not making that up.) After the show on the first night, I left a note for his manager at the adjoining hotel asking if I could interview Divine the next day. It worked—I got a call, and my heart pounded rapidly as I realized I’d landed an interview with one of my idols.

The only recording device I had was a ghetto blaster—and an ugly yellow one at that. But damn, was Divine ever sweet. He was just the best: warm, funny, and full of star power. It was precisely the kind of experience a starstruck student journalist like me had been dreaming of.

Will a sequel to Pink Flamingos ever be made? I read John Waters’ article in American Film magazine about his attempts to get someone to financially back the sequel.

I think it was scrapped after Edith Massey died. John said he would never try to find a replacement for her or me or for anyone. As far as he’s concerned, there aren’t any.

Certainly not for Edith Massey.

Or me [Laughs]. You’re talking to me! No, that’s true. There aren’t any other Ediths around. But really, it wasn’t my favourite script. We did enough with dog shit.

You’ve had a lot of press about the shit.

Yes. Whether it was real or not, I’m not going to say, but the scene stuck in people’s minds… stuck in my throat.

I’ve heard that scene estranged you from your parents.

For about nine years, we didn’t speak. We’re great now, though.

How did you and John Waters meet and how was it that you established a professional relationship?

We were neighbours. We grew up in Lutherville, Maryland. John was quite a movie buff, as I was too. John just always wanted to make movies. John went on to make a film for $250 that was shown at the University of Maryland and we were invited to introduce a screening. I went all done up, and John came onstage first and gave a long speech about movie-making, and then he introduced me as the “most beautiful woman in the world almost”—almost because I’m a man—and I came out having a modeling fit and then answered questions about acting, which I thought took a lot of balls. That was our routine. John also helped me with my first club act in San Francisco. I would push out a shopping cart onstage, and there was ground beef and fish and a telephone book. I would spin the fish around and rub them all over my body and then throw them into the audience, which would splatter all over people. It was a horrible mess. Then I’d throw ground beef at the people, and rip the telephone book in half. Three guys all dressed in black would come out and lie down head to foot, I would walk over top of them and squat over their faces and flashbulbs would go off. Then I would answer questions from the audience. This was my nightclub act at the time.

This must have been very racy then, years ago, versus today [1986].

Yes, it’s come around now. People used to sit there with their mouths just open—especially if they got hit by a fish.

You travel a lot. Do foreign customs agents ever give you hassles?

Only in Canada. Once in Germany, and another time in Sweden.

You’re riding a wave of popularity right now. Where do you see yourself in 10 years?

I’m going for it. Right to the top. Why not? All I can do is not make it.

One could say you already have. You’re quite a cult phenomenon.

Oh, but I want more than that. I want Oscars, Golden Globes, Grammys. I mean, why not? If somebody had told me five or six years ago that I’d have gold and platinum records, I would have said they were crazy because I didn’t sing. But now I’ve got them on the wall.

I’d like to see you get an Oscar.

So would I. And I will, if I have anything to say about it. It’s been a dream of mine since I was a kid.

Some people are offended by your act. They consider you a bit of a freak—a novelty only because you’re overweight and obviously homosexual. How do you react?

They’re assholes [Laughs]. These are people who are uptight about their sexuality. Not everyone’s going to like me, but I’m not doing my act for everyone. I’m doing it for those who like it. Some people don’t like Diana Ross, and all she does is get up and sing pop songs. I don’t think I’m a freak, I’m just another entertainer who happened to do something no one else had.
Divine's Last Interview...

An interview with Divine
http://wockner.blogspot.com/2007/04/interview-with-divine.html

Two weeks before his 1988 death in Los Angeles, I conducted one of the last sit-down interviews with Divine. We talked in Chicago, where he was promoting his new film, Hairspray, and performing at a local dance bar. Hairspray had just begun receiving wide critical acclaim and was being heralded as Divine's and filmmaker John Waters' crossover into the mainstream.

Hairspray is a comedy about a fat teenage girl, Tracy Turnblad, who becomes a star in 1962 on a live TV dance program in Baltimore. Once Tracy achieves fame, she uses her celebrity status to force racial integration of the show, which had previously hosted "Negro Day" once a month. Divine plays Tracy's diet-pill-popping mother, a bored housewife who can't stand hearing The Corny Collins Dance Show blast out of the tube every day after school, until her daughter becomes a star.

I talked with Divine on a Friday afternoon at the Belmont Hotel. He came across as relaxed, soft-spoken, gentle, perhaps even a little innocent and shy.

Rex Wockner: Your new film is a teen flick and a half-serious message movie. It almost seemed to me like more of a message movie.

Divine: No, it's strictly supposed to be a comedy. John [Waters] always makes movies about things that aren't particularly funny. The only reason the race things were brought into the movie at all is because they did exist. Blacks weren't allowed on these dance shows in 1962. Sometimes we had record hops where there were ropes down the middle of the room, with blacks on one side and whites on the other. I remember as a child growing up in Baltimore that black people always sat in the back of the bus or the streetcar.

RW: Edna Turnblad, the bored, jaded, always-ironing, diet-pill-popping housewife you play in Hairspray, is wonderful. Where inside you did you find Edna?

Divine: Well, I'm a fat person, so I did go to many diet doctors and take diet pills. I guess I just remembered those things. It was more or less my own inspiration. Of course, I did have a mother -- I do have a mother and I love her very much -- but she did take diet pills in the 60s. I think a lot of mothers did. A lot of them still do; she stopped taking hers. I think it got to the point where a lot of women took them just because they could get all their housework done. It did enable them to speed up a little bit.

For the look, well, women in Baltimore still look like that a lot. The first day I was in costume in Baltimore, I walked down the street, right through the camera crew, right past John, as close as you are, and kept walking and nobody looked at me twice. I looked like just another housewife in the downtown Baltimore area.

RW: Have you ever gotten involved in gay politics?

Divine: Well, I think when you're an actor, you can't get too involved in politics or religion because you're bound to offend somebody. My job is not to offend, my job is to make people forget about all their problems for an hour and have a good time and laugh. I am very much into work for AIDS and, of course, I stick up for the gay community and do everything I can for the gay community. I always would, there's no question about that. I would not be like some other stars running around denying that I got my start in gay clubs, as certain female vocalists and actresses have done. You know, the fact that Liberace denied this until his death I found very shocking. He could have said something before he popped off; it wouldn't have done any harm for anybody then.

But I've been very involved in AIDS work. You can't spread yourself thin and take everything on at one time. I just did one for AIDS Action Baltimore, which is my hometown. Not that I think I'm Elizabeth Taylor, but I think she's been doing great things, too. [Taylor is chair of the American Foundation for AIDS Research, a large private fundraising organization]. I think it's fabulous that someone with that much clout and that kind of name should get that involved, because I've heard her speak and she says a lot of people are just like "shhhhhhh," you know, "don't get involved." They're so afraid of lending their name because they don't want to get mixed up in some gay mess. But as we all know now, it's not just a gay mess; it could kill anybody.

I still find it very shocking, and it makes me so angry, that this was just let go for such a long time before anything happened. It makes me think that they were they just trying to kill all the gay people. Is that what they thought was going to happen? Let's just get rid of all the queers and then we won't have any more problems, la dee da dee da da? I find it all so shocking; there just aren't words.

RW: Do you live alone?

Divine: Yes.

RW: Not even a dog or cat?

Divine: I had dogs but I just gave them away because I'm not home very much and I didn't think it was very fair for them to be in and out of the kennels and staying with different people all the time. And then I found out that one of the housekeepers I had was beating them everyday with a broom. So I had to fire the housekeeper and now I'm suing because I want something done; that person should be punished. You just don't go around abusing anyone, especially an animal who is now scared to death every time you take the broom out of the closet. I don't understand cruelty and it really enrages me.

RW: What do you do when you're not working? Do you have hobbies?

Divine: Well, I collect china. I have enough china for a sit-down dinner for about 180 people, 12 courses. I just had to build extra cabinets in my house to accommodate it. Now I'm starting to give it away for gifts. I shop. I can shop for just about anything. When I have a week off now and then, I like to do as much of nothing as possible. I like to have no schedule because I'm usually on a schedule all day every day. Once a year I take a month off. I have a place in Ibiza, Spain. I like to go sit there for a month. A different group of friends fly in every week; the other ones leave and new ones come, so my friends can have a vacation there with me because, what fun is it to have a house in Spain if you're going to sit there by yourself?

I go to movies. I love very macho movies -- Charles Bronson. I watched Death Wish III last night. Not that I want things to be like that or anything, but it just fascinates me for some reason. Sylvester Stallone movies, Arnold Schwarzenegger, Chuck Norris. Of course, A Room With a View I thought was a beautiful movie; I can appreciate that too.

RW: Is there anybody you'd really like to work with?

Divine: A lot of the Italian directors I'd love to work with; they're have such keen minds. Elizabeth Taylor has always been my idol; she seemed to be the epitome of the American movie star, the way she looked and her whole lifestyle. Lana Turner I'd love to work with. I always loved Lana. Rock Hudson was always one of my favorite actors. Warren Beatty I've always liked in the movies.

RW: Since you often play women in films, do you find that you can walk down the street as a man unrecognized, still sneak around and enjoy life without being followed?

Divine: I could until I started doing talk shows and things out of costume, and that sort of ruined all that for me, but I had to do that because I was being labeled a transvestite all the time. If I was a transvestite, I'd be sitting here with a polka-dot blouse on, a crocodile bag, a little hat and a pair of slingback shoes, which I do have on underneath these clothes (he laughs). No, those are my work clothes, which I keep in a box until it's time to put them on and do my job, which is to entertain. When I do go out walking around, well, you don't go out and do that unless you're ready, because people will come up to you and will talk to you and will take your time and ask you to sign autographs.

But these are the very people who do buy tickets and do make you a star or whatever you want to call it -- a personality or a celebrity. So, you do owe this time to them. You've got to be ready to take that on once you set yourself out into the public. Or you can stay home all the time.

RW: When I come to your show tonight, I'm going to meet a very different person than the one I met this afternoon?

Divine: I think quite different, yes. Five hundred percent different. It just comes with the territory. When I'm done up or dressed up, it seems to just sweep over me.

The Pope of Puke in a one-man standup show taped during one of his college lecture circuit tours. Well, not so much standup as JW telling amusing anecdotes in his usual droll and witty conversational way (most of which I gather members of this Tribe will already have heard or read about, but it's nice to have the man tell it to ya like at a dinner party). Available for rental or Netflix now. And be sure not to miss the Q&A in the bonus materials section.

10/19 Happy Birthday Divine

Harris Glenn Milstead (October 19, 1945 – March 7, 1988) was best known for his drag persona, Divine.

Early life

Born in Towson, Maryland to Bernard and Diana Frances Milstead, at the age of 12 the family moved to Lutherville, a suburb of Baltimore. John Waters was a childhood friend who lived six houses down the street.

Film career

Milstead starred in a number of films and was part of the regular cast known as the Dreamlanders. The Dreamlanders appeared in many of John Waters' earlier works such as Pink Flamingos, Female Trouble, Polyester, and Hairspray. Repeating their successful pairing in Polyester, in 1985 Divine appeared opposite Tab Hunter in their bigger hit Lust in the Dust.

He is also remembered as a major character in the documentary homage Divine Trash by Steve Yeager, covering the life and work of John Waters.

In the 1980s, Milstead's dance-music records were hits through America, Europe, and Australia. The typical progressive type of synthesizer disco music was composed, created, performed and produced by Bobby Orlando. In Britain his Stock, Aitken and Waterman record "You Think You're A Man" was his most successful hit, reaching #16.

In 1988, the British film The Fruit Machine (1988), a/k/a Wonderland (USA), utilized Milstead's songs in a nightclub disco dance sequence that showcased an early Robbie Coltrane in drag as "Annabelle", the club's owner (a cross between Divine and Judy Garland in The Wizard of Oz).

Late in his career, Milstead also played in non-drag roles in his last three films: Trouble in Mind, Hairspray, and Out of the Dark. In Hairspray he played two roles, one male and one female (which he had first done in the earlier Female Trouble).

Sudden death

In 1988, Milstead was chosen to portray the dual character of Peggy Bundy's Mother and her Uncle Otto on the new FOX prime-time series Married With Children. Quite unexpectedly, he died at age 42 from sleep apnea in Los Angeles, California. The cause was attributed to his obesity. The producers of Married With Children sent flowers to the funeral, along with a humorous card that read, "If you didn't want to do the show, you could have just SAID something!"

His funeral in Towson, Maryland was preceded by a funeral procession attended by thousands.

PLAGUES and PLEASURES on the SALTON SEA returns to the Red Vic; 8/1-8/3

Hey folks.

After being on the road for the past 3 months shooting and editing my new doc on the band FISHBONE, I'm back in Fog City, USA and ready to again rock the Red Vic Moviehouse on Haight Street, as our documentary, PLAGUES & PLEASURES ON THE SALTON SEA, has been invited for a return enagement this Tuesday - 8/1, Wednesday - 8/2, and Thursday - 8/3.

Yes, it's another one of those e-mails, as our little film is fast becoming a cult hit on the festival and theatrical scene. Heck, we're at 25 Best Documentary Awards and counting, so we want you to come out and join in the fun of a movie and beers on Haight Street. Or if you're busy, have seen the film, or just whatever, invite your friends, neighbors, and strangers to come on out. I know, I know, this is a lot of shameless self-promotion from me, a supposedly humble person, but I'm looking to have some fun up on Haight Street and help my favorite movie theater sell some popcorn, so what else am I going to do but throw the invite out to you all.

Keep on truckin'.

Chris
Dirs. Chris Metzler and Jeff Springer US 2005 (video: 71 min.)

Plagues and Pleasures is a feature documentary directed by Chris Metzler & Jeff Springer, with narration by legendary counterculture filmmaker John Waters and music by the southwestern, alt-rock supergroup, Friends of Dean Martinez.

Once known as the California Riviera, the Salton Sea is now called one of America's worst ecological disasters: a fetid, stagnant, salty lake, coughing up dead fish and birds by the thousands. Yet a few hardy eccentrics hang on to hope, including a roadside nudist waving at passing European tourists, a man building a religious mountain out of mud and paint, beer-loving Hungarian Revolutionary Hunky Daddy, and the real-estate Ronald McDonald known simply as The Landman. Through their perceptions and misconceptions, the strange history and unexpected beauty of the Salton Sea is revealed.

Plays with short, LSD-A-GO-GO (Dir. Scott Calonico, 10 min.)

Director Chris Metzler will be present at evening screenings for Q&A.

Showtimes: Tues & Thurs: 7:15, 9:15; Wed: 2:00, 7:15, 9:15

Tickets: $8 for evening screenings, $6 for 2:00 matinees, $4 for seniors and children at all times. Tickets go on sale 20 minutes before each screening at the Red Vic box office.

February 2006

John Waters new series of films for HereTV, Movies that Will Corrupt You, begins Friday, February 3 with FUEGO, a film by Armando Bo from 1969 about Laura, a seemingly insatiable woman whose sexual desire is running out of control. As you can see from the picture, Laura and Dawn Davenport may have been separated at birth!

Here's an update of the other films that were selected by John for the series: L.I.E., Irreversible, Baxter, Porn Theatre, Clean, Shaven, Pink Narcissus, The Hours and Times, Freeway, Beefcake, Criminal Lovers, The Fluffer, Dottie Gets Spanked, and Sissy Boy Slap Party.

And there's a great interview with John about the series in Gay City News:

There's a "Very John Waters Xmas" thing coming to Portland. It's not cheap & it's in a small venue. I keep calling the place to find out if John Waters is actually going to be there, but they only have a recording that doesn't offer any info. Can anyone shed some light on this situation for me. The tickets are around 50 bucks! I don't want to shell out the cash unless he's going to be there in the flesh!

The only problem so far is John Travolta as Edna!??! YIKES!

From http://comingsoon.net/news/topnews.php?id=11373

Adam Shankman Set to Helm Hairspray
Source: Variety
September 29, 2005

New Line Cinema has set Adam Shankman to direct and choreograph Hairspray, the screen adaptation of the Broadway musical, reports Variety. Craig Zadan and Neil Meron are producing.

Shankman, who's finishing Cheaper by the Dozen 2 for 20th Century Fox, will begin working immediately with screenwriter Leslie Dixon and lyricist-composers Marc Shaiman and Scott Wittman, the Tony-winning team that wrote the "Hairspray" score. Production will begin early next year in Baltimore, for a summer 2007 release.

The trade adds that John Travolta is expected to play Edna Turnblad, the role Harvey Fierstein originated onstage. The involvement of Shankman, who directed Bringing Down the House, makes Queen Latifah an instant front-runner for the role of Motormouth Maybelle.

Original choreographer Jerry Mitchell and stage director Jack O'Brien were originally attached to co-direct. The job was also offered to Chicago director Rob Marshall, who passed.

Chris Metzler in Person. Narrated by John Waters, this documentary dives into Southern California's Salton Sea to explore the ecology, history, and culture that have developed around this saline sinkhole. Variety called it “jaunty and fun . . . with a cast of colorful locals who make the residents of Vernon, Florida seem normal.” With short Dimmer.

GALAXIE PICTURES is currently developing 'Unfiltered', the directorial debut for Creighton Vero, screenwriter of the indie cult hit 'Spun'.

For more information contact: pete@galaxie-pictures.com

SYNOPSIS:

Teenage Sherri, a new arrival to Lake Charles, Louisiana, gets a rude awakening as the locals give her a slice of real Southern hospitality, small town style. Included in her Lake Charles initiation are some hard lessons on friendship, family, and bigotry—not the kind made of ephemeral remarks and incidental ostracizing of outsiders, but real and vicious institutional racism, the kind that ends in murder.

Sherri arrives as the locals prepare for the funeral of Mary, the town’s Contraband Days Celebration Queen. With her death begins the shattering of the perfect picture of southern hospitality that she represents. Grieving is glossed over in favor of panic about the town’s quickly evaporating marijuana supply. What’s really died is the smiling welcoming south, and its warmth and hospitality are quickly replaced by a rapid growth of weeds.

Then the ensemble cast of Unfiltered gradually unwinds into a hard picture of gritty southern life as facades of tolerance gradually peel / crumble away. What’s revealed is the stuff that’s usually swept under the carpet.

John Waters: Change of Life
Through September 4, 2005

www.warhol.org/whats_on/exhibitions.html

As he has moved from the avant-garde margin to mainstream culture, John Waters has been a powerful, influential iconic figure in popular culture. Organized by Lisa Phillips and Marvin Heiferman for The New Museum of Contemporary Art in New York City, Change of Life zeroes in on the cinematic mind of John Waters particularly focusing on the early works, both cinematic and still photography that became a basis for his entire career. Water's longevity as a cultural figure is based in his unique ability to tap into our most private attractions to the erotic, perverse, sleazy, and tasteless and harness them to the fictional and conceptual devices that drive both popular entertainment and art. The show will contain 76 photographic works along with five sculptural installations as well as the first showing of his early extraordinary underground films.

John Waters Curates Andy’s “Porn”
Through August 28, 2005

Drawn from the Museum’s permanent collection, the artworks, photographs, videos, films and archival material in this small exhibition have been personally selected by Waters in an effort to explore the influence of sexual images on Andy Warhol’s life and work as well as the ever-evolving societal definition of pornography.
“No holiday family get-together is complete without…this true cinematic masterpiece ..about a man completely consumed by Christmas…. I wish I had kids. I'd make them watch it every year and if they didn't like it, they'd be punished.” - John Waters
Directed by Gaspar Noé. With Monica Bellucci, Vincent Cassel.

With a story told backward Irréversible “rips through boundaries in the passion of its performances…and its graphic exploration of sexual violence. Not to mention its surreal cinematography and aggressive sound design, which outrage sensibilities as audaciously as they provoke thought." - David Sterritt, The Christian Science Monitor

although i may have seen hairspray earlier in life -- i didn't 'discover' JW films until I was at a friends house 5/6 years ago...

watched 4/5 in a row through the night, after everyone went to sleep...

when the sun came out, i walked outside, rewired. I sat and drank coffee, stared at a rock bluff, and wondered why the hell i had never seen these films before -- and wanted to buy a video camera immediatly.

still have not bought the camera -- but my brain is still f-ed

"THE GIRLS"

Fine Porcelain Plates by: John Waters

http://www.adoraporcelain.com/

Adora Porcelain proudly presents The Girls by John Waters. A limited edition series of three 10 1/4 inch plates featuring three mannequin busts transfigured through thickly applied make-up and elaborate wigs into the larger than life characters Tina, Kim and Kathy. An uncanny imitation of life is conveyed in the penetrating stare of their sparkling eyes, and each bust, distinctively styled, evokes a striking personality. These are the artist’s “friends,” who share his home in Baltimore. Known for his irreverent approach to cultural iconography, Waters regards the collectible plate as a perfect vehicle for sharing his personal sensibility with a wider, yet still peculiar audience.
