when: Now through Sat 8.18 (Tue-Fri: 10:30am-5:30pm / Sat: 11am-5pm)
where: Rena Bransten Gallery (77 Geary St, 415.982.3292)
price: FREE
Executed with bonhomie but also deviant panache, John Waters presents his third solo exhibition with Rena Bransten Gallery. Fans familiar with the cult-auteur's films but less so with his art shouldn't be surprised to find a six-foot rubber snake (Waters' "reincarnation") or 20 photographic stills gleaned from films deemed "unwatchable" by critics. The stills, laid out side-by-side, isolate the same satisfyingly humorous and satirical juxtapositions that make watching cult films enjoyable in the first place. While the show might have just as easily been titled Reckless Filmmakers, the artist's trademark focus on culture's castaways and misfits shines through.
